Winton Pharmacy was first established in 1907 by Thomas Walker, and is now owned by Madeleine Miles who bought it from her parents. Michelle and Geoff Carleton.
Michelle and Geoff originally owned Carletons Pharmacy in Otautau and in 1999 purchased Winton Pharmacy.They ran both business's until 2003, when unable to find a Pharmacist to work in Otautau,they converted it to a Depot Pharmacy and dispensed those prescriptions from Winton.
Having brought up children and lived most of their adult lives in Otautau , we have a commitment
to give as great a service as we can to the people of Western and Central Southland.
Madeleine came back to Southland with her husband and now lives in Winton. She has 2 children and loves the idea of a family run local business.
Our philosophy is simple, "treat everyone equally,and with the respect we would expect if we were the customer." A friendly face, a warm greeting, and a helpful attitude.

Geoff and Michelle Carleton...Pharmacists
Geoff and Michelle bought Winton Pharmacy from Peter Burdon in 1999. Before this time they owned Carletons Pharmacy in Otautau which had belonged to Geoffs father. Michelle also had worked at Winton Pharmacy after she had finished training as a Pharmacist and before having their three daughters.Since their children are now working Michelle has had more time to implement additional health services that they are now offering at the pharmacy. Michelle qualified as an independent vaccinator in 2012 and has been giving flu along with other vaccinations in the pharmacy and out in the community since then.
She has just completed an advanced diploma in Nutrition and can help you with advice in this area. She has also got up and running INR testing in the pharmacy (see under health services)
Geoff and Michelle will continue to look at other health services that can be of benefit to the community. Michelle has lots of interests including travel, golf, reading, pilates, sewing and knitting.....finding it hard to fit everything in.
Geoff is a trustee of the Otautau and Winton Medical centres and a keen golfer.
Since April 2024 they are no longer owners as their daughter Madeleine has taken over ownership
Barbara Shaw..Retail Manager
Barbara is our Retail Manager and has worked in this capacity since we took over Winton Pharmacy. Barbara started work with Geoff's father in Otautau many years ago and after her children left home she came back to work for us.Barbara is our expert on all things retail from Health Supplements to Cosmetics.
Barbara's interests are gardening, sewing and her grandchildren.
Margaret Johnson...Carletons Health Centre Shop assistant
Margaret has worked for us in the Otautau Health Shop since 2003. She was born and bred in Otautau, bought up her three children and still lives here with her husband Ian.She is a Grandmother of 5 and enjoys holidaying away to see them. Her interests are tennis, swimming, walking and gardening and she makes a great shortbread!!!
Madeleine Miles - pharmacist / owner
Madeleine is now the owner of Winton Pharmacy. She bought it from her parents in April 2024.Madeleine is a quailified clinicial pharmacist ...graduating from Otago University in 2011.
She has worked as a hospital and Clinical Pharmacist in Wellington , Taranaki , and Dunedin.
She has a Clinical Pharmacy Diploma as well as her Bachelor of Pharmacy.
She has moved back to Southland after having her daughter , Elsie , in November 2020. Elena , her second daughter , joined the family in 2022.
She lives in Winton with her husband , Adam .
Toni McKee - pharmacist
Toni is an Pharmacist , graduating from Otago University in 2020.She has moved South and lives in Invercargill with her partner Riley who is a builder.
Toni is a keen netball enthusiast and netball umpire
Lynne Laverty
Lynne is born and bred in Winton and married to David (Lav) a local volunteer fireman.They have raised their 2 daughters (who have flown the nest) . You may recognise Lynne from her many years at the BNZ.She is interested in all things crafty and is now busy learning all about the many products that are sold in our store and to give you the best advice
